ABOUT JÓZSEF DOMJÁN
AND HIS ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENTS
József Domján was one of the most important color woodcut artists in the Twentieth Century. He was born in Hungary in 1907 and attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest where he was trained in painting. The Royal Academy which is now called the Hungarian University of Fine Art is organizing a Symposium and major retrospective exhibition about the life and work of this world renowned artist.
Domján became an internationally recognized artist while living in Hungary during his early years as an artist. He developed a special and unique style in the color woodcut medium. On a six month tour of China, exhibiting and lecturing, Domjan was awarded the title, "Master of the Color Woodcut" , an honor given once in a Century. The Hungarian government recognized him by decorating him with the Munkácsy and Kossuth prizes, the most coveted recognitions for Hungarian artists. After the Hungarian Uprising he emigrated to the West and eventually went to New York to exhibit in 1957. With his family he settled in USA. Domjan was a celebrated artist in America with over 500 hundred exhibitions on four continents. The Domjan color woodcut prints are in many major Museums in America, Japan, and Europe. In Hungary the art work of Domjan is being "rediscovered" by a new generation. This Symposium and a series of exhibitions, the opening of the Domjan Gallery at the A.P.A. Cultural Center, as well as the rededication of the Domjan collection in the Sárospatak Képtár are important steps to reacquaint Hungarian art lovers and collectors with this extraordinary "Master of the Color Woodcut".
