CURATING THE GLOBAL

We will re-visit some of the main questions introduced in art practice and curating by globalization, through an overview starting with the “modernist primitivisms” till Documenta 11.

The project Africa.cont (www.africacont.org) will be examined as a case study

Africa.cont is conceived as a platform for the development of relationships encompassing communication, cooperation and interaction between Europe, African countries and their diasporas. Based on the affirmation of equal relations, favouring the interaction of autonomous realities and taking into account their natural different histories, environment and social, economic and political organisation forms. Furthermore, it shall be exempt from any political or religious affiliation, as well as not being subject to any pressure groups or the influence of any economic groups.

The scope of its action wishes to encompass knowledge, understanding and plural creativity, encompassing all cultural African manifestations while being an agent for global contemporary interaction: the visual arts, cinema, video, photography, architecture, urban and landscape planning, design, theatre, music, dance, literature, human sciences, fashion, cooking, including electronic tools and the internet as communication vehicles and cultural supports par excellence for our contemporary knowledge-based society.

While based in Lisbon, Africa.cont, shall be in touch with a multiplicity of centres, through a network of similar organizations, located preferably in Africa, but also in Europe and the Americas, with which it intends to establish forms of collaboration and reciprocity.
