ESSL ART AWARD CEE 2017
powered by the main shareholder of VIENNA INSURANCE GROUP
What is new at art academies of Central- and Southeastern Europe? Which artistic,
social, socio-political and economic issues are of concern to young artists?
Conferred every two years, the ESSL ART AWARD is dedicated to the discovery and support of art students at art academies in Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey.
The ESSL ART AWARD aims at supporting artists while still being in education. Therefore it is crucial for this project to cooperate with the art academies. These institutions are the nucleus and well established places for the training of the future generations of artists. One main goal of the award is to offer a broad and multi-layered insight into the recent young art scene of this region and to give the artists the opportunity to present their works in an international museum’s context.
The Essl Museum is Austria’s largest private museum that gives an excellent overview of Austrian painting since 1945 as well as on international contemporary art. In 2005 the art collectors and founders Prof. Agnes and Karlheinz Essl launched the ESSL ART AWARD, which by now has established as a sustainable and well-known project for the promotion of young art students of Central and South-Eastern Europe. Up to now the ESSL ART AWARD was successfully awarded six times biannually between 2005 and 2015. With the ESSL ART AWARD CEE 2017 this tradition will be continued.
Selection procedure of the ESSL ART AWARD CEE 2017
From May 2016 the Online Application system will be open to all art students of the participating countries. Open to all media, each student can apply with a maximum of 3 works. An international jury will then short-list ten nominees per country. Each group of nominees will be presented in a public group exhibition (Nominees’ Exhibition), taking place in each participating country in May/June 2017.
On the opening day, the international jury will choose the two award winners of the ESSL ART AWARD CEE 2017 in each country directly on site.
Furthermore the patroness of the ESSL ART AWARD CEE has the opportunity to issue an optional Collector’s Invitation to one promising young talent to complement the exhibition at the Essl Museum.
Their works will be exhibited in a comprehensive group show at the Essl Museum in autumn/winter 2017.
In addition the exclusive sponsor of the ESSL ART AWARD CEE, Wiener Städtische Versicherungsverein, the main shareholder of VIENNA INSURANCE GROUP, awards independent distinctions, the VIG SPECIAL INVITATION, to one nominee per country: the selected artists will receive an artist fee and the invitation to take part in an exhibition at the Vienna Ringturm, the Group’s headquarters, in 2018.
