Role of the course within the specialist training scheme: The objective of the course is to provide the students with an adequate basis in drawing-painting, to enrich their visual experiences during the course of autonomous artistic training. The drawing?painting exercises serve as a means of direct preparation for design exercises. Studio exercises work together, and in parallel with, increases in the degree of difficulty and complexity of designing exercises. The variational elaboration method of drawing, figure drawing and painting studies models the conditions of design-realistic exercises. The emphasis on genre and form in exercises is individualised and, according to the program, changed/varied using different techniques and sizes.
Course description, major areas of study (per semester)
Semester 1

1.1.
Exploratory-assessment works, head-face studies, head movement, study of form, individual studies. Technique: introducing and using known graphic forms.
1.2.
Decorative ? synthesising works. Figure, focus on image-composition order.
Semester 2
2.1.
The role of colours and coloured materials in decorative composition. Continuous drawing studies.
2.2.
Elaboration of February?s exercise. Further examination of experiences of colour, of form-spot-mass-line composition with the help of available graphic (printmaking) techniques. Basics of relief printing, photogravure, level printing, lino cutting, etching, monotype, silkscreen printing, lithography.
Semester 3
Continuation of the studies of the previous year, utilisation of the experiences acquired in summer during workshop practice with the aid of traditional drawing-painting-photography procedures. The aim is the cultivation of an individual graphic (design) style.
3.1.
The relationship between the students? workshop results, their developing means of individual expression and the possibilities afforded by technique. Portrait painting.
3.2.
Figure drawing (whole-figure composition, analysis-synthesis). Recommended experiments associated with the relationship of drawing and other art forms, with focus on illustration.
Semester 4
4.1.
Nude drawing, whole figure, representation of the possibilities of colour. Croquis on a regular basis.
4.2.
Composition exercises with available models with use of earlier ?Figures in Space? studies. Croquis on a regular basis.
4.3.
Image-making studies through figure drawing, graphics and painting, studio work.
