Role of the course within the specialist training scheme:
The objective of the course is to provide students with practically oriented preparation for teaching. In accordance with this objective, the program includes lectures, demonstrative exercises and complex exercises, which consist of the regularly paced elaboration of a topic, its syllabification and visual illustration. Emphasis is placed on the roles of the teacher. The discussion of professional concepts is also centred on this objective. Another important point of consideration is that various teacher roles receive different emphasis depending on the nature of the course taught. It is a general aim that educators are able define their work within the overall cultural perception.
Teachers? roles are grouped in accordance with practical considerations as follows:
1) teacher as an example
2) teacher as coach
3) teacher as mediator of knowledge
In the first role, techniques of self-awareness and methods which aid in sizing up situations correctly are helpful. Apart from familiarisation with methods and literature, continuous practice of self-reflection is important.
The second role is closely connected with the first and the third, emphasis, however, falls first and foremost on the varying levels and compositions of students? ability. Here students? studies in developmental psychology (psychology course) provide a good basis. It is especially important for teachers to get to know their students from various aspects ? in this they can rely on the methods of testing and independent task formulation. As abilities are developing, the definition of objectives and the opportunities for motivation are crucial. For this reason, a familiarity with methods which provide aid in these respects are indispensable. The development and strengthening of problem solving behaviour, as general principle, is emphasised.
The third role has in part to do with knowledge associated with a specific speciality, and requires teachers to continuously educate themselves and assimilate the new information in accordance with the system of the discipline or subject area. On the other hand, this role has also to do with the method of elaboration, which facilitates the process of passing on knowledge ? especially as regards practical experience. The third role primarily relates to the teaching methodology of various areas of specialty ? in the context of this course the general points of consideration involved in the methods of passing on knowledge are discussed. The question of building the course material and of syllabification are important points of deliberation in this respect.
