Language of instruction: English, German, French, Italian
Course requirements: regular class attendance, active class participation, regular completion of written assignments - achieving competence of the language to an intermediate level
Method of evaluation of course work: oral and written report, checking of homework assignments
Marking method: based on oral class work and written work
Exam requirements: written and oral language competence tested based on tasks in accordance with the intermediate level language exam (basically the material covered in the 4 semesters).
Teaching methods: mixed, direct monolingual, audio-visual, small group- and pair-work
Recommended study methods: oral and written practice in accordance with instructions given during class sessions
Number of assignments the student is required to complete through individual work: regular from one class session to the next
Type of assignments the student is required to complete through individual work: tests, compositions, elaboration on topics (monologue), (working in pairs) dialogues, reading comprehension
Role of the course within the specialist training scheme: preparing students for the intermediate language exam, which is a precondition for earning a degree; enabling students to study foreign special literature; equipping students with the foreign language competence necessary for entering competitions and applying for scholarships.
Course description, major areas of study (per semester): Following an assessment of prior language competence, with the help of a monolingual textbook the course prepares students for the various types of exam tasks, which in essence are aimed at gaining competence of the four language skills (listening comprehension, speaking, reading comprehension, writing) at an intermediate level. In the process, students also learn the functional use of the language and familiarise themselves with the language for special purpose. Students are given a mark at the end of each semester and, at the end of the 4th semester, have an exam.

Textbooks and workbooks which are most suitable for the comprehension level of the given group, as well as periodicals and up-to-date, preferably the latest, supplementary materials, audio tapes and educational video films.
