Painting Department

Theoretical and practical training in the Painting Program is taught in a traditional formulation of students gathered around professors (tutor system). This approach not only presupposes ongoing cooperation between mentor and students in an informal, quasi-seminar environment, but it also permits in-house evaluation as well as real-world tests of talent by means of mid- and end-of-year exhibitions, debuts, art competitions, and degree shows.

The objective of the program is to train painters who, in possession of their acquired skills, their own personal approach and ability for self-expression, will become artists capable of pursuing their activities in an autonomous manner. The Painting Department collaborates with the Sculpture, Graphics and Intermedia Departments organizing joint thematic exhibitions and competitions. Beyond providing training in techniques and traditions, discussions about contemporary art phenomena, as well as new technical, stylistic and medial problems, also comprise part of the program. Graduates are expected to have a firm grasp of the tools of expression in – and the possibilities of – universal painting, as well as its materials and techniques. The overlaps between fine arts genres, which have become increasingly characteristic of recent times, due in no small part to the infl uence of new media and information technology, are clearly manifest in the diversity of our students’ work.
